<description lang=fr>Cet article examine l’activisme contre la toxicomanie et le SIDA qui a pris naissance aux Etats-Unis dans les années 1980, en particulier celui qui se développa dans la ville de New York. Dans le cadre de la théorie des mouvements sociaux, la perspective de « l’opportunité politique » semble appropriée pour analyser un tel mouvement. Cependant, contrairement à ce que suggère cette perspective, la thèse de cet article défend l’idée que « les opportunités scientifiques et légales », plutôt que « politiques » expliquent le succès relatif de ce mouvement entre les années 1980 et 1990.</description>
<description lang=en>This article examines the drug and AIDS movement in the United States of the mid-1980s, particularly the one that developed in New York City. Within social movement theory, the “political opportunity” perspective seems appropriate to analyze such a movement; however, unlike what this model suggests, it is contended that “scientific and legal opportunities” rather than “political opportunities” account for the movement’s relative success between the mid-1980s and the mid-1990s.</description>
