He was educated at Sangre Grande Government School and Queen's Royal College. He also studied at the London School of Economics and was trained as an accountant and economist. He did a brief stint in the public service before joining Shell Oil Company. He joined the Democratic Labour Party at the invitation of Rudranath Capildeo and was Member of Parliament for Pointe-a-Pierre in 1961.
