<description>The photograph shows Dr. Eric Williams at the hoisting of the Federation flag after the opening of Federal Parliament in 1956. On the right of Dr. Williams is Sir Grantley Adams, the Premier of Barbados (1951-1958). In recognition of his meritorious contribution to Barbados and the wider Caribbean region, Her Majesty, the Queen of England, knighted him in 1957. Adams became the first and only Prime Minister of the West Indies Federation, 1958-1962 and was an important figure in the regional integration movement. On the right of Sir Adams, is Norman Manley, Chief Minister of Jamaica (the position of the elected leader was given this name in 1953).</description>
